Chp 5: The reuniting of Gatby and Daisy
In chapter 5 we find more mysterious things about Gatsby. I'm starting to think that Gatsby didn't get money from inheritance. I think the money he earned haves something to do with Mr Wolfsheim, the gambler who was introduced in chapter 4. In chapter 5 Gatsby and Nick was standing on the lawn and looking at Gastby's house. Gatsby said, "It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it." Nick told Gatsby, "I thought you inherited your money." (90) I think Gatsby lied about his inherited money. He got the money some other way and it might've been illegal! When Gatsby shows Daisy his house, Daisy gets real excited, she even cries over him having beautiful shirts. She says, "They're such beautiful shorts, it makes me sad becasue I've never seen such-such beautiful shirts before."(92) I thought that was wierd. Another comment Daisy says that I don't get is when she said, " Look at that, I'd like to just get one of those pink clouds and put you in it and push you around."(94) What does she mean by that? One other wierd event that Gatsby did was when he woke up Ewing Klipspringer and told him to play the piano. While Ewing was explaining how he can't play, everytime he said, " I'm all out of prac--" (94,95) Gatsby cut him off. Also, another wierd thing was when Gatsby got a phone call. The phone call seem suspicious like it was an "up to no good" call. So there's lots of wierd things going on in this chapter. My perdiction is that Daisy's mistress is going to be Gatsby. I also think that we're going to learn more things about the phone call Gatsby had.
Chp 4: Getting to know Gatsby
Reading more into this book, I learn more facts about Gatsby. Before chapter 3 I only knew a couple facts about Gatsby. I knew that he throws parties at his house all the time and that he is a little strange. In chapter 3 , Nick said,"for he told me that he had just bought a hydroplane, and was going to try it out in the morning."(47) Gatsby asked Nick to go with him. In chapter 4, Gatsby gave Nick a ride to lunch, he was telling Nick about who he really is. Gatsby says,"I'm going to tell you something about my life. He also says,"I don't want you to get a wrong idea of me from all these stories you hear." (65) Gatsby obviously knew that lots of people tell false rumors about him and he wants Nick to know the truth. When Gatsby tells Nick about his "life", Nick doesnt believe it one bit. He says," With an effort I managed to restrain my incredulous laugter." (66) While Gatsby was telling his story , he mentioned that he's trying to forget something very sad that had happened to him long ago. (66) What is that sad thing? I think the sad thing could be his past relationship with Daisy or it could've been what happened to him as a kid or in the war.
Chp 1: Who is Nick?
Before reading chapter 1 I knew that Nick is the narrator. He is also non-judgemental, from the mid-west, looks at everybody the same, and is very nice. He's also cousins with Daisy, who is married to Tom. In the beginning of chapter 1 it tells how Nick became non-judgemental. He says, "whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."(1) I think that means that not everybody haves what you have. You don't know what people are going through and don't know them long enough to judge them. Nick also says that since people know that he won't judge them, they tell Nick their personal stories. Little do they know, Nick doesn't really care about what they're telling him. In the chapter it also talks about how Fitzgerald moved Nick out to the west egg and that he's neighbors with Gatsby and his second cousin, Daisy, and her husband lives in the east egg and Nick visits them. I think that we're going to learn more about Gatsby and what's so important about him.
